I started my life in the Lakeside housing projects on the southside of Pontiac, Michigan. My obsession with art came early, but my environment provided no real outlets for my talent. As a result, I became a wayward teen, and dodged many bullets on my way to manhood. Along the way, I saw my friends going to prison and dying, so at 17 I decided to join the Army. The majority of my adult life was spent in the military. While serving, I dedicated myself to higher education, which I continued after leaving the armed forces. In the end, I had earned an Associates, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees. The last two in Art Education.
I use many different mediums, such as oil, clay, acrylics, pastels, stone and woodworking. I believe that working in a single medium is restrictive to my artistic process. Each idea manifests in its own individual style.
I relish in the love of my people, and many of my pieces are directly influenced by this love. Also, the community around me and where I grew up. I love African skin in all its shades. I want this to be reflected in my work.
